The Department of Environmental Conservation reports last year was the safest hunting season on record
The 2025 hunting season was the safest in New York’s recorded history according to the DEC. The total number of hunting-related shooting incidents last season was seven with no fatalities reported. Five incidents were self-inflicted, two involved more than one person and one incident involved an unlicensed individual who was hunting illegally, the DEC reports. State officials say hunting is one of the most popular forms of wildlife-related recreation in the state with nearly 600,000 New Yorkers participating annually.
