The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation is bringing back its First-Time Camper Program for 2026. The free program helps newcomers experience camping by providing tents, sleeping bags, camp chairs, firewood, and guidance from camping ambassadors. Participants can enter a lottery through June 12 for camping weekends at selected Adirondack campgrounds this summer. The program also offers opportunities to learn fishing, hiking, birdwatching, paddling, and other outdoor activities.
