• Three Saratoga Jockeys Suspended for Careless Riding

  Three Saratoga Race Course jockeys have received three-day suspensions for careless riding. The three were penalized for separate incidents during races July 17 and 18. One of them, Flavien Prat, leads Saratoga riders with 20 wins and will serve his suspension August 12 through 14.

• Wrong-Way DWI Crash Injures Two on Thruway

  New York State Police say 24 year old David Russell of Westfield, Massachusetts, drove the wrong way on Interstate 87 and struck a pickup head-on. A tractor-trailer overturned while avoiding the crash. Two drivers suffered minor injuries. Russell faces DWI and reckless endangerment charges.

• Police Examine Mother’s Possible Role in Mechanicville Deaths

  Mechanicville police say they have not ruled out Sarah Myers as possibly being involved in the deaths of her four children. Myers, the children and their grandmother were found dead June 23. Investigators say poisoning may have caused most of the deaths, while one child suffered fatal sharp-force injuries. Toxicology and forensic testing remain underway.

• Finch Paper Closure Worries Vermont Loggers

  The planned closure of Finch Paper’s Glens Falls mill is raising concerns among Vermont loggers. The mill has been a nearby buyer of low-grade wood used for pulp. Without it, logging companies may face longer hauling distances, higher costs and fewer markets for material that cannot be sold as higher-value timber.
