New research suggests mice may play a bigger role than deer in driving Lyme disease risk. Scientists have now found that larger white-footed mouse populations were followed by about a 40 percent increase in young blacklegged ticks the next year. Researchers also found that large acorn crops can lead to more mice and, two years later, more ticks. The findings are based on more than three decades of data that has been collected here in New York State.
