The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation is rolling out new and expanded safety measures ahead of the busy summer recreation season in the Adirondacks. Commissioner Amanda Lefton says the effort includes more trail stewards, stricter parking enforcement, portable toilets in high-use areas and the hiring of 19 assistant forest rangers. The state is also continuing its “Love Our New York Lands” campaign encouraging safe and responsible outdoor recreation. Officials say visitation to state forest preserve lands continues to climb, creating concerns over public safety, traffic and environmental damage in heavily visited areas.
