Assemblyman Matt Simpson is speaking out against immigration-related provisions included in New York’s state budget, calling them an attack on local control and raising constitutional concerns. Simpson says the legislation limits cooperation between local law enforcement and federal immigration authorities while imposing what he described as statewide sanctuary policies from Albany. The Adirondack-area Republican also argued the measures prevent counties and towns from deciding how to handle public safety issues in their own communities. Simpson says he plans to work with other lawmakers to fight the provisions and restore local authority over enforcement decisions.
